6 Minute English - The teenage brain

I like your new hardy.

Well, thanks a lot. Yes, a hardy is a switcher with a heart by the way. You don't think I am too old for hardy dude?

Never. No. You too old. Never Rob. It's all about how young you feel inside, isn't it.

It is right. I don't feel a day over 16 Neil.

Excellent. Now that I help you. Because in this programme, we're talking about the teenage brain. So are you ready for today's quiz question, Rob?

Yes, I'm Neil. Far away.

OK. What part of the brain is connected with basic emotion? Is it the
a) XXXX
b) XXXX
c) XXXX

OK. I was terrible biology. I am never listening class so I would take a guess and say the answer is a) XXXX.

OK. Well, we'll find out if that is the right answer at the end of the programme. Now where you a well-behaved student?

Well, I wasn't badly behaved. But we had a horrible school uniform and sometimes I got the tension just having my shirt handout.

Well. That's pretty harsh. Detention means having the state of school after day to do extra work.

Yes, it was a punishment for doing something wrong.  Now some people think the typical teenager behavior such as embarrassment, anxiety, move winds and risk taking is caused by changing hormone.

Move swings are sudden changing of mood. And hormones are chemicals in the body that stimulate cell and organ interaction.

Yes. The Euro moody teenager Neil.

I might be. No that not go there Rob. Now apparently, it's not only our hormone change when we reach adolescence. That's a age when we start change into adult.

That's right. According to scientific research, some teenager behavior is probably caused by changing in the brain. Let's listen to professor XXXX talking about this. What's the phrase she uses to mean to enjoy.

This is pretty established theory of risk taking, the biological based risk taking is that two different systems in the brain develop in different rate. The part of the brain called XXX system which include the region of brain give you rewarding feeling after taking a risk, kind of kick XXX risk. And the emotion after taking the risk are developing more quickly than the part of the brain called XXXXX which inhabit risk taking.

So what risks do teenagers typically take?

Well, the thing most parents worried about. Such as drinking, smoking possibly taking drugs and driving too fast.

And the reason they take these risks might be because the area of the brain that reward risk taking behavior develops more quickly than the area of the brain that inhabits or slows down risk taking behavior.

What was the phrase she used to mean enjoy something.

It was XXXXXX kick out something. Teenagers get kicked out of and are reward for taking risk by one part of the brain, the XXX system. Well, the other part, the XXXXX, does little to slow things down.

Well that sounds more found being an adult. But actually we off  teenagers as a hard time. Let's hear more about this from XXXX.

Something one of the nature thinks working with teenagers is that they are the butt of many jokes and they are XXXX laughed from the center and demonize newspapers. And what ever I tweet anything about teenagers  brain, . In variably and I got reply from someone going ...

Now of course some teenagers are very brainy. Brainy is another way saying clever. I know young people who are brilliant. Math, Art and Science.

But we hear XXXX describes teenagers as being the butt of the joke. That means to be its target. And if you parody someone, you copy the style in the exaggerated way to make people laugh.

And to demonize a person or a group means to talk about them as if they are evil or threatening. Poor teenager Rob.

Don't worry Neil. They are growing up being like us one day. And now it's time to heat the answer to today's quiz question.

Yes it is. I ask what part of the brain is connected with basic emotion.
