6 Minute English - Is eating meat killing our planet

Now Finn, there is nothing I like more often talking into the juicy stake, motion in the hamburger, or chewing in the nice piece  roast beef. Does  it sound good, doesn't it? But meat eater like us might need to think again about the amount  we eat.

Yes, that's right. Because in the programme today we just discuss how eating meat at the problem of green house gas.

Green house gas is a type of gas that stops heat escaping from the atmosphere. Because of the green house effect,  it warms us our planet are in the climate change.

Yes, that't not a good thing. We further aparse the green house gas being caused by pollution from factories.

And for using container like pan or perfume which is capped under high pressure so that it can be sprayed. We can this air XXX. But according to the recent report, the production of meat is also adding to the problem.

We talk more about the thing and look some related vocabulary. But not before we set today's  question. So are you ready, Finn?

Oh, I am very much ready in waiting, Rob.

Well, according to a study of America, how many tons of beef  is produced globally every year? Is it
a) 59 million tons
b) 69 million tons
c) 79 million tons

Let's go see precise at that say, 79 million tons. c. Let me know the answer at the end of the programe.

Let's continue our discussion about the link between  meat and green house gases. Researcher from Cambridge XXX University estimate green house gases from food production will go up 80 percent if meat and diary consumption continue to rise at its current rate. That consumption here means the process of eating food.

So that means more and more of our eating meat, there is a surge. Let's find out exactly why BBC environmentalist  XXXX. See if you can hear why meat production is causing the problem.

For surge meat eating, we drive more deforestation as farm is seeking increasing amount of land. the study says. Cutting forest releases green house gases from the woods. And the soil, and fertilizer create green house gases too. The report says under current trends, agriculture alarm  will cause the world to busty targets for reducing the risky danger of climate change.

So eating more meat means farmer needs more land to keep animal on. And to get more land, they need to cut down trees, which is called deforestation.

It's deforestation. Cutting down forest the causes green house gases from wood and soil to release. And there is another reason too.The use of fertilizer.

Yes some XXX natural or chemical substances added to soil to help plan grow while this plan use to feed animals.

And another problem is that more field use to gram corps to eat, like whit, are being used to grow food  to feed the animal that we literate.

Yes, researcher showed beef cattle need 28 time more land than pork, portrait or daily farming.

So it is a big problem. But  many of us have appetite  and need and interest for meat. Especially for XXXX. XXX really animals who just eat meat but we are 30 human to a XXX sometimes because they just love me.

And something else is tempting us too.

Is it something is encouraging us to eat more. See if you can hear what it is in the next part of XXXX's report.

The real challenge is probably appetite. There is a burger restaurant booming every city. People are voting with their belly. And it is no normally mushroom burger with their after.

Some interesting language there. He describes the increasing burger restaurants as a boom. So a magic increase. And he says people are voting their belly.

It's a nice phrase. He means people are showing that they like burger restaurants by going to them and eating more.

And not buying burger made of vegetable, or things like mushroom burgers. They are buying  neating meat like beef burgers.

Yes, indeed. So leave me some consumption predicted to double in the next 40 years as people globally get wealthier. It's a problem that not going to go away.

A bit like today's question.

So yes. Today's question was according to scientific study of America, how many tons of beef  is produced globally every year?

I went for a big, Rob. I went for c 79 million tons.

That's a lot to eat. But you are wrong, yes. The answer is actually 59 million tons which is quite a lot. This is according to the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences.
