6 Minute English - Lifts

I'd like to start but asking how do you get up here to the studio at 6th floor this morning?

Well by lift of course.

Thought so. That's what I'm going to talk about in this programee, lifts or elevators as American call them.

Lifts, that's not very exciting, isn't it. What is that to say about lifts, Rob. I mean it take you up and down and that's it really.

Well, you all surprise me Neil. But first let's see if you can answer this question. Which country has the most lifts? Is it:
a) the USA也滿熱門的阿
b) Italy, or
c) China

Well, it seems obvious to me because of the massive expansion and construction industry, I am going to say China.

OK. Well, we'll find out if you are right or wrong later on. But now, let's elevate or race knowledge about lifts. These invention has had quite effects on which floor people choose to lift on.

Yes Well. I suppose before the days of lifts, rich people live on the ground floor and poor people live on the top floor and had to use stairs. Now thought it's the other way run and that in turn has given rise to paint houses, with that fantastic views.

And history of lift goes back in the long way. It was XXX media who invented the first lift in 230 BC. In the middle ages, the example of lifts been used in military purposes. Then they help to move agricultural products around. They really came into the wrong, or became very useful in the industrial revolution.

And there is why range of massive use to driven too. Pulllit, water and steam power, electric and so on. Today tall blocks of flags couldn't take existed  without them. And you're right, Rob. There is more to lifts and meet the eye.

That certainly is. But haven't noticed how nobody seize anything in the lifts. Have you ever felt uneasy in the lift, Neil?

Actually yes I have. Just this morning, I was standing next to a big boss. And neither of us really knew  what to say to each other.

Yes, it's strange, isn't it. Well, let's listen to Jason Wall, sell manager elevator ltd, talking about this subject. He thinks he may found the solution to the problem.  The uses a word to describe the state of feeling strange or uneasy. Can you tell me what it is?

It's a very anxious experience to span in the lift. I think everyone behaves very differently and awkwardly in the lift. If you have thing around you to take away that awkward next to, we'll look out phones sometimes or look down the floor wall.

He said awkwardness which describes the state of feeling strange or uneasy. He suggested that advertisement in lift can improve our experience to being in one. I suppose that could mean moving digital aids.

It could. But before we can see that further, that delphon to lift a little more. Of course it's always danger of getting stocking one. But thankfully that's rarely. And usually you can dial an emergency number and being rescued.

And do you know most lifts marked the 13th floor as 12A or something similar. Because 13 is considered an unlucky number. And by the way, Rob, have you ever heard of the elevator pitch?

Yes, I have Neil. It's something you can do when you stucking in the lift with someone.

Yes, people said if you have a idea or product to sell, you should be able to sell it or pitch it to someone quickly. So in other words, in the timing takes, for elevator or lift, to reach top of the building.

It's a good idea if the lift doesn't break down. Let's get back to the thought of digital advertising can make traveling by lift an more pleasant experience. Let's hear from Jason Wall again. He uses a word meaning XXXX. Can you spot it?

I think we all think that technology become both slimier and also cheaper as well, and it become much attractive to people that  purchase lift for there are so many different ways to enhance or live with life box, with moving image, with television screen and become quite exciting for us and hopefully little a bit more interesting for people use everyday.

He says slimier which means thinner.

And he says enhance which means improve. Well he could beyond something. looking and moving advertisement not be better than listening to music. That's non-stop pre-recorded boring music.

That's terrible. I hate music. Ok, so Neil, do you remember the question I ask you at the beginning of the programme.
