6 Minute English - Laughter is bad for you

Neil, angry to tell you a joke.

OK. Yes, come on.

Which part of learning the English language are boxes best at?

Which part of  English are boxes best at?

I don't know.

Punctuation.

That's actually quite funny.

You really think it's.

I'm glad to make you that. And you might not think me for it after the programme.

What's that?

Because a paper published by The British Medical Journal says that laughter is not always the best mixin and sometimes it can actually be harmful.

In that case, I definitely will be laughing at your joke anymore. And to be honesty, wasn't funny anyway.

Today we'll be exploring the connections between laughter and XXXX and looking at some XXX related vocabulary. But before we get into the story, Neil, a question. Your parents at what age do  babies begin to laught? Is it
a) 0 to three months
b) three to six months
c) six to eight months

Right. I'm pretty sure at least my memory is very bad, it's a) 0 to three months.

OK. Well, we'll find out if you are right at the end of the programme. OK so laughter as I said is generally thought as a good thing. There is a phrase I said earlier which is 'laughter is the best medicine'.

Yes. And talking of medicine, there are many medical studies which examine the benefit of the laughter. It reduces the stress. It's good to your hear. Things like that. But now you're telling me it can have some negative effects.

Yes. Why don't we listen to the Professor Robin Furner, who is one of the authord of the search paper. How many negative effects of laughter does he mention?

We found people who have had harm with disturbances to stop their heart. We found people who have fainted. We found people who discular the burst. We found people who their jaw or burst their lung.

Quite a few. It seems laughing can be no laughing matter.

Indeed. He mentions five problems cause by laughter, including heart rhythm disturbance, fainting, burst , dislocated jaws and even burst lungs.

Some of those are quite nasty. Fainting is when you lose consciousness, past out.  And XXXX, is a chew through it through pass from the mouth to the stomach. So our burst gallid will be horrible.

I think it will be very bad. We also heard about burst lungs. Now lungs are the organism in your chest that you use to breathe. And I think really hard to do this to get a dislocated jaw. Now to dislocated something is to move it out of its normal place or position. So you dislocated a jaw ... ouch.

Well, thanks for hearing there is no danger of a dislocated jaws. With your jaw, Finn.

Come on. OK. In fact, these five dangers are only summed they will mention in the study.

But surely they must been some positive findings.

Yes. let's listen to Professor Robin Furner again. Which help benefit does he mention.

You actually use energy when you laugh. You move your  dare friend. You expand your lung. And basis thing can be helpful. For example, you set the laughing for xxxx will burn out 40 kcal. And you laugh all day you use up to 2000 kcal.

That's more likely. Laughing can help you lose weight. Because you use energy when you laugh.

In fact, quite a lot of energy. If you laugh all day, you use 2000 cal which was most people consume everyday.

He also thinks laughing makes people feel better. And it can reduce chance of having a heart attack.

So overall, what's the story. Laughing, good or bad?

Well, he says for most people, most of the time, laughing is a great thing. And will last good because I quite love to laugh, don't you, Neil?

Earlier I asked you Neil at what age do babies begin to laugh?
