6 Minute English - Drinking around the world

Today we're talking about something many of us are familiar with. Drinking in the bar or pub. Now Neil, do you have favorite bar or pub?

I have few favorites. But one particular is a pub I used to go to after work with friends or colleagues when you go personal service, they brought the drink to you which is very unusual in this country.

Certainly it is. I love the old fashion style English pub with plenty XXXXX, casual XXXX sitting in the rolling lock file. A lot of king on this bright, loud modern bars. And the drink is expensive there too.

You are very traditional, aren't you. Let's talk more about places to drink around the world soon and highlight some drinking related vocabulary. But first, how about a question?

Of course. In the UK, the word pub is short for public house. And there are more than 15000 of them with many different historical names. But do you know which name is the most popular pub name. Is it
a) The Red Line
b) The Crown
c)  The Royal Oak

Well, that's difficult. There are lot of pubs with those names. But I am going to guess c) the Royal Oak.

OK, we will find out if you are right or wrong later. So let's start talking about buzzing. In formal way, of saying drinking alcohol. As you know in the UK we have the pub as a place we can socialize or meet friends. And drink together. But all around the world, people have places to come together and share a drink. And not necessarily an alcohol drink.

A pub is also sometimes called the haven or even as saloon, that's the sort of drinking den you will see in the all cowboy film. But the bar tends to be the most one world for describing the place to have a drink.

A bar is also the word to describe the lounge won't count. The drinks are put on when you order or ask for drink. There is a amazing bar to drinking around the world, I drank one in Sweden that was completely made of ice. Even the glasses was made of ice.

I find the world when I go in the world, there is always Irish theme pub. When you can usually get a pin of Genius. In fact it claim the highest pub in the world on the root of Mt.Everest. It's a Everest pub.

Well, walking off them must be thirsty work. What is the remotest pub in the world, it is in the corner of Greenland. BBC corespondent XXXX recently reported from there from BBC. Let's hear the word he uses to describe the pub and customers.

There is only one pub, a window resbonker. While country-western music plays, local man and woman mostly dress in chest suite, XXX hat and hiking boot. Seats almost silently around the bar collection and warble wooden chair.

A very lonely place, the only pub around. It has no windows and he compares it with bunker. That's a place that is usually underground and built to protect the people from bully or bomb.

Where the pub is normally a place to have a good time. But this doesn't sound like a fun place. Because nobody is talking and there is no much furniture does it on. It's space.

Yes, just a few red bond cat. This is a small sitting area arranged around the table. And nobody just cheers. Not the place for a right in the evening.

Well. Maybe it is. Because when the drink starts flowing and everyone comes together under dark, cold green neon. It could be fun. The only problem is, that alcohol is being limited. As Robert XXX explains.

Only beers is available. The Danish brand. Spirit is completely banned in the past of Greenland five years ago. Do you know quite a astonishing level of consumption right on local population.

So even only drink beer, consumption or drinking of spirit has been stopped or banned. Because people drink too much of it.

Well, Robert you know you don't have to drink to have a good time.

Well, that's true. It's not good for your health and you get a terrible handover. You feel ill the next day. Maybe I have a orange juice next time I go to my local buzzer or pub.

Come on Rob. What is the most popular name for a British buzzer.
