6 Minute English - Cigarettes v e-cigarettes

Today we're going to talk about electronic cigarettes. Also called e-cigarettes. And tech words that will help you discuss the subject to understand and use about it. At start by asking you Finn, did you smoke?

No, I don't smoke, Rob. Although sometimes, the smoke from other people cigarettes, it makes me cough.

Yes, it's because you are a secondary smoker. In other words, you are someone who doesn't smoke but breathe in smoke from someone else cigarette. And this smoke is very harmful to your health. So here is today's question, Finn. Do you heard? According to the WHO, there are more than 4000 chemicals in cigarette smoke. How many of these are known to be harmful to our health. Is it at least
a) 50
b) 150
c) 250

Rob, you know. I honestly have no idea. Let's say c) 250.

Always the pastness. Well you will get the answer at the end of the programme. Some estimates say there are more than 1 million people using e-cigarette just in the UK. But this advice might not be very safe for secondary smoker.

Really. I thought they were ok because they produce vapor that water in the form of gas, rather than the smoke from the harmful chemicals that you get in ordinary cigarettes.

Well, the WHO isn't convinced e-cigarettes are  any safer to secondary smoker. It's recommended a ban on the use of electronic cigarette indoors and the sell to people under 18 years old.

The ban, in other words, they don't want it  to be permitted indoors anymore. Well, I know the e-cigarette were by heating liquid Nicotine, Nicotine is the substance in tobacco which makes it addictive.  And it turns this into vapor which is then breathe in by the smoker which I thought it is ok because it is just vapor and then for.. ok for non-smoker too.

What you say is vapor with some chemicals in it.

Right.

And experts fear it could have similar effects to the smoker produced by ordinary cigarettes. Listen to professor XXXX says, he is from  the faculty of public health here in the UK. Which words does he use to describe the use of e-cigarettes for extended period of time.

There are scientists in America who have been studied second-handed effects. Tobacco smoker who are raising this issue now about the e-cigarette. So we really count on these things get established before we know what long-term effects going to be.

He talks about long-term effect. And he means the constant use of  e-cigarette for a extended period of time might cause harm which will not aware of yet. You can't light off cigarette in pub or bar anymore. It was the effect of people cigarette smoker come others to let the ban on older cigarette in Britain.

Private companies  XXXX are keen not to risk bringing back any kind of smoking to closed spaces in public places. This is likely to annoy many smokers who have been moving to electronic cigarette in the attempt to cut down the Nicotine or even to quit smoking.

Yes. many people want to quit smoking. Stop smoking at once. And they find it's easier to do this if they can use the e-cigarette. In the last few decades, smokers have been feeling persecuted.

Well, there is a lot of pressure on them to quit the habit. Let's listen to this smoker who uses e-cigarette. He's in pub in XXXX.  Which word does he use to talk about the harm certainly to do to the children.

He reacted everything in this world. What we are going to have eventually that we are drinking beers in pub. This is done for the children. To watch what happening.

He uses the word XXXXX, meaning harmful. He complains there is over reaction to things like cigarette and alcohol. Yes and over reaction means responding to something in a way which is more falseful than required. He complained one day the authority might end up banning people from drinking alcohol in pubs. Pubs we know are about to which most customers go to drink alcohol.

Then I think he is using some ireland here, like letting the joke there.

But the right of smoker are not smoker generated passionate debated. But here is effect which might make people who are about to like e-cigarette, think again.

Oh, maybe.

I told you early in the programme there are more than 4000 chemicals in cigarette smoke. And I ask you how many of these are known to be harmful to health.
