6 Minute English - Is a door just a door

You look very please, Neil.

I'm please. I just move into my new flat.

OK, fantastic. Congratulation. So where is the new flat?

It's in the city. It's one bed flat so it's beasu meaning small but attractive. There is a balcony, of course a couple of deck chest and a BBQ.

I can't wait to see it. sounds perfect. Well today we're just discussing housing. And why in some buildings there is separated entrances for rich and poor residents. So are you ready for today's quiz question, Neil?

I'm all ears.

Ok. So you mean you're listening carefully.

I am.

Right. What does social housing mean? Is it housing for people who a) want to buy or rent at low price b)  who want to live together sharing facilities c) who are not able  to pay rent at it all.

OK. I think the answer is a) to buy or rent at low price.

OK, we'll see if you're right or wrong later on in the programme. So have you met your neighborhood yet Neil?

Yes, I bumped  into one couple as I was leaving for work this morning.

Yes, I see. Bump into means to meet somebody by chance. So were they friendly?

Well, they complained about me blocking the communion area with my bike. And also my guitar playing. But apart from that, they seem nice.

The communion area is the area shared by numbers of people. Well I hate to say it, Neil, but your guitar playing is annoying.

Rob, genius is't appreciated here, I think. OK, let's listen to journalist XXX talking about rich and poor doors.

Front to say it, it's a 20 story building what about it, I got tentative  blue glass window, is a balcony on every floor she looks from straight. And there is a very plash, a forum, had a lot of luxurious painted house, spectacular views.

But this is one journalist XXX saw when he went on the other side of the same building.

So you can't stand the side of building. Windows, crushed bold window, flatted about here. So you know balconies it is big brick concrete world, as you down you really, the other door.

So this building has one entrance with polished or expensive luxurious XXXX. And XXX means entrance so. Then there is another entrance down the narrow way or narrow passage between the buildings.

This entrance leads to flat with small windows and no balconies. What is that Rob?

That's because the alley way entrance is the so called poor door. These is no  or tentative glass window because for these residents because they pay less rent than the people living in the apartment at the front.

XXXX means something fashionable and expensive that designs to impress people. And tentative glass is colored glass so people can't look through your windows.

That sounds useful. Do you have a tentative glass window, Neil?

No, I don't. Tentative sun glasses, Rob,  I can afford. So what do people think about having a rich and a poor door at the same building, Rob.

Well, some people think it's terrible. They say it's segregation or separation, an different treatment of people. And I can't believe the poor door people put up with it really.

To put up with something means to accept something that is annoying without complaining about it. The thing is the poor door people don't pay merely. as much rent. And they don't have to pay the same service charges that the rich door people pay.

A service charge is a mount of people you pay to the owner of the apartment building for things like putting up rubbish. Well, let's listen to the experience of the poor door resident.

We can't use the lift because it's for the rich people. So when the door open, I use it. So they try to turn me off. Yes , for using.

So what has XXX been doing for rich door resident don't like, Rob?

He has been using that lift because it has a part man door.

And what does XXX door mean he says can't take me to the court.

He is inviting the rich door resident to take legal action against him. But XXX doesn't really think he is doing anything wrong.

OK, it's time to hear  the answer to today's quiz question.

Yes, what does social housing mean? Is it flat or house for people who a) want to buy or rent at low price b) who want to live together sharing facilities c) who aren't able to pay any rent at all.

And I said a) to buy or rent at lower  price.

And you were right. So well done for that Neil.

I am.

Right. What does social housing mean? Is it housing for people who… a) want to buy or rent at low price? b) who want to live together sharing facilities? or c) who aren’t able to pay rent at itany rent at all?

OK, I think the answer is a) to buy or rent at low price.

OK. we'll Well, we’ll see if you were right or wrong later on in the programme. So, have you met your neighbours yet, Neil?

Yes – I bumped into one couple as I was leaving for work this morning.

I see. Bump into means to meet somebody by chance. So were they friendly?

Well, they complained about me blocking the communion communal area with my bike – and also about my guitar playing. But apart from that, they seem seemed nice!

The communion area is the area communal area is an area that is shared by numbers number of people. Well, I hate to say it, Neil, but your guitar playing is annoying.

Oh, Rob, genius is't isn’t appreciated here, I think. OK… Let’s listen to the journalist XXX Tom Bateman talking about rich and poor doors.

In front to say it, it's 20-story building what of luxurious painted house, us here is 20-storey building. Right about it, me I got tentative tinted blue glass window, is balcony windows andbalconies on every floor she looks as you look from straight. the street. And there is a very plash, forum, had lot plush foyer. sign in the window says ‘luxurious penthouses withspectacular views.

But this is one what the journalist XXX Tom Bateman saw when he went on around the other side of the same building.

So you can't stand So as you come down the side of building. Windows, crushed bold window, flatted about here. So you know balconies it the building, you can see the windows – quite smallwindows – of the flats above here – certainly no balconies. This is big brick grey concrete world, as you down you really, wall and as you walk down an alleyway towards the other door.

So this building has one entrance with polished plush – or expensive and luxurious XXXX. – foyer. And XXX foyer means entrance so. hall. Then there’s another entrance down the narrowway an alleyway – or narrow passage between the buildings.

This entrance leads to flat flats with small windows and no balconies. What is that Why’s that, Rob?

That’s because the alley way alleyway entrance is the so-called poor door. There’s no swanky foyer or tentative tinted glass window because windows for these residents because they pay less rent than the people living in the apartment apartments at the front.

XXXX Swanky means something fashionable and expensive that designs is designed to impress people. And tentative glass is colored tinted glass is coloured glass – so people can’t look through your windows.

That sounds useful! Do you have tentative tinted glass window, windows, Neil?

No, I don’t. Tentative sun glasses, Rob, Tinted sunglasses are all that I can afford. So what do people you think about having a rich door and a poor door at for the same building, Rob?

Well, some people think it’s terrible. They say it’s segregation – or separation an and different treatment of people – and I can’t believe the poor-door people put up with it really!

To put up with something means to accept something that is annoying without complaining about it. The thing is, though, the poor-door people don’t pay merely. nearly as much rent. And they don’t have to pay the same service charges that the rich-door people pay.

A service charge is an amount of money you pay to the owner of the an apartment building for things like putting up out the rubbish. Well, let’s listen to the an experience of the mount ofpeople poor-door resident.

We can’t use the lift… because it's it’s for the rich people. So when the door whenever the doors open, I use it. So they try and tell me off for using it. say, ‘here, come, take me to turn me off.Yes for using. court – don’t mind’.

So what has XXX Abdul been doing for that the rich-door resident residents don’t like, Rob?

he has Well, he’s been using that their lift because it has part man it’s near his apartment door. And what does XXX door Abdul mean when he says, can't ‘come, take me to the court? court’?

He’s inviting the rich-door resident residents to take legal action against him, but XXX Abdul doesn’t really think he’s doing anything wrong.

OK, it’s time to hear the answer to today’s quiz question. Yes. What does social housing mean? Is it flat or house for people who a) want to buy or rent at flats or houses for people… a) to buyor rent at low price? b) who want to live together sharing facilities? or c) who aren’t able to pay any rent at all? And I said a) to buy or rent at lower low price. And you were right! So well done for that that, Neil
