6 Minute English - The first space walk

Now I watched that space movie last night. The one astronaut  are stranded in the space.

Oh yes. Another one. Stranded, that means stuck at a place with only a  small chance of leaving.

Gravity, that was the name of the film.

Yes, that's the one. that's the one. I'm talking about space. Do you know this year marked the 50th anniversary of the first ever space walk. On the 18 march 1965, Russian astronaut XXX was the first man to draft free in space. 500 km from the surface of the earth. And that's the subject of today's show.

What on earth must he feel like?

Wow, very good. Yes, it would feel like nothing on earth. That's to say very strange indeed. He was the first person to experience the colorful geography of our planet  starched down before him.

Very poetry glove. How about answering today's quiz question.

OK

How long did the first space walk last? Was it
a) 2 minutes
b) 12 minutes
c) 22 minutes

All quite sure. I think I'll go one of the middle, 12 minute.

Well, we'll find out if you are right or wrong later on.

Now cosmos, literately means, sailor of the universe, but xxx's mission wasn't plan sailing. In other words, it wasn't easy for straightforward.

That's right. No one had ever go out to space before. It was unknown territory. Unknown territory means a place or activity that people don't know anything about it or not experience it before. And as it happens, that will be big problem.

When XXX leaves the spacecraft, his space suit inflated or swallowed up, like a balloon. Because the pressure inside her suit is greater than outside. This made it impossible for XXX to get back through the door the spacecraft. In a life threatening situation.

Well, let's listen to XXXX, the first Britain in space, talking about it.

To decrease the pressure in suit, at which means it will be bit able to move inside it. But it means the amount of the go around his face is not dangerous. it lost its concuit for very long. So if it is not able to get in quickly, he is going to oxygen starvation. But of course he had one way another back in , he didn't die he don't. So he has present to might get in without this. Go back in, suit him soft around, might he close to as pressure correct in.

Now if you can't cop with something, it means you unable to deal successfully with a difficult situation. An in here, the situation is having very little oxygen.

But XXX had the presence in mind to find the solution. Presence in mind means being able to react quickly and stay calm in a difficult or dangerous situation.

And you find it within XXXX's shoes, meaning if I'm with his situation, I would pain headache big time.

Me too. And there will be plenty more belt before the mission is over.

The spacecraft automatically grid entry system failed. So the XXX had to fire the rocket manually, meaning control by hand which he never done before.

And that's not all. The failed to detach or separate from spacecraft, a equipment module. And this sent him tumbling through  space to work.

Good as made. But the capsule didn't finally detached. And then you will think they will been home drive, wouldn't you. Home drive means being close to achieve a goal.

Well, they certainly want to try. The capsule touched down or landed hundreds  kilometer of course, in freezing Siberia. Populated only by wolves or bears. XXXX has sweated so much on the space walk he is with the feel of water. up to his knees. Both XXX has ring out or twisted squeeze they are close to avoid fly by.

And of course, by the way, meas not following the right route. Those men must be overjoyed when they are finally ally to the safety  two days later.

But what seems unfair to me is you all know about Apollo moon landing. How many of us know about the first space walk?

Yes, well at least we two now and of course our listeners do too.

OK, let's has the answer to the quizz question.
